Ulajh, featuring Janhvi Kapoor, is an espionage thriller produced by Junglee Pictures, the same team that brought us the acclaimed film Raazi in 2018. Directed by Sudhanshu Saria, a National Award-winning filmmaker known for his short film Knock Knock Knock, this movie presents a strong cast including Gulshan Devaiah, Roshan Mathew, Rajesh Tailang, Meiyang Chang, and Adil Hussain. With such a talented team behind it, Ulajh starts off with great potential.
The film kicks off in a foreign setting, introducing us to Janhvi’s character, Suhana Bhatia, a young Indian Foreign Service officer. We see her running uphill in the vibrant city of Kathmandu, Nepal. This scene feels reminiscent of the iconic opening of The Silence of the Lambs, as both characters are women striving to make their mark in male-dominated fields. However, while the film tries to draw these parallels, it doesn’t delve deeply enough into Suhana’s internal struggles, leaving the story feeling less impactful than it could have been.
Suhana is soon appointed as India’s Deputy High Commissioner in London, a significant position for someone so young. The film hints at nepotism, given her family background—her grandfather was the first UN representative from India, and her father, Dhanraj Bhatia, played by Adil Hussain, is a respected diplomat. This setup creates an intriguing premise, but the narrative doesn’t fully explore the complexities of her character or the challenges she faces in her new role. Overall, while Ulajh has a promising start, it could benefit from a deeper exploration of its themes and characters.
